Curating a mixtape or playlist used to be an act of creativity, requiring hours of exploring available music, collecting physical copies of that music, and even a little math to make sure the music and message fit the constraints of the analog medium of a cassette tape. The result of that effort was a thoughtful expression of affection, nostalgia, or a celebration of a specific time or place. The connection that was once enhanced by playlist creation has been undermined by three forces: 1) The almost limitless availability of digital music formats, 2) the ability these libraries give us to instantaneously curate playlists, and 3) the artificial intelligence-powered algorithms that automatically create playlists “for us”.  To celebrate the art that music curation once was, B-side is a visual interpretation of playlist notation, representing the profiles of curated music while acknowledging the artform that a thoughtfully curated playlist is.
